PLAYER SAFETY

Coach Safety Resources

Player Safety Comes First

Creating a safe environment is the foundation of great coaching. These guidelines help protect players—and protect you as a coach.

A Helpful Starting Point for Coaches

Children participate in sport to have fun, develop skills, make friends, and build confidence. Those benefits can only be fully realized when players feel safe, supported, and secure in their environment.

Below are recommended safety and safeguarding resources to help coaches recognize, respond to, and prevent injuries while also building good habits that reduce risk before problems occur.

These materials are valuable supplemental learning tools. They do not replace official coach certification or required training, but they are an important part of building awareness and preparedness throughout the season.

Important Note

This page highlights a sample selection of safety resources. A more complete set of safety education modules is included in the U.S. Soccer Grassroots License Training and SafeSport courses.

LNYSA Safety Standard: The 2-Adult Rule

At LNYSA, we follow a simple and important principle:

Coaches should never be alone with players.

At every practice and game, there should always be at least two adults present—typically the coach and a parent advocate, team volunteer, or assistant coach.

Why Safeguarding Matters

Safeguarding is not only about responding to incidents or concerns. It is also about preventing issues before they happen by creating the right structures, behaviors, and environment around players.

This includes understanding policies, following organizational guidelines, maintaining professional boundaries, and making sure players are always in a setting that feels secure and accountable.

  • Protects players’ physical and emotional wellbeing
  • Creates a safe and positive team environment
  • Builds trust with families and the community
  • Supports a culture of transparency and accountability

Protecting the Children — and Yourself

One of the most important parts of safeguarding is that it also protects you as a coach. Clear structure and visibility reduce the risk of misunderstandings, allegations, or unsafe situations.

By following consistent best practices, coaches create a healthier environment for players while also protecting themselves through transparency.

  • Always follow the LNYSA 2-Adult Rule
  • Avoid one-on-one situations whenever possible
  • Communicate openly and transparently with parents and guardians
  • Use appropriate language and behavior at all times
  • Follow LNYSA, U.S. Soccer, and SafeSport safeguarding and reporting procedures

What This Looks Like in Real Life

  • Ask a parent advocate to stay at practice if you are the only coach
  • At games and practices, make sure at least one other adult is present with you at all times
  • Never remain alone with a player after training ends
  • Keep communication visible through team chats, group texts, or parent emails
  • Create a team culture where parents feel welcome, informed, and involved

Why This Matters for Coaches

  • Helps protect players’ health and wellbeing
  • Supports informed and confident coaching decisions
  • Reinforces LNYSA’s commitment to safe play
  • Aligns with U.S. Soccer and SafeSport best practices

A Good Safety Habit for Coaches

Review safety resources before the season starts and refresh yourself during the year. Even a short review can help you respond more quickly, coach more confidently, and keep player wellbeing at the center of every session.

Safety Is Part of Great Coaching

Thank you for helping create a safe, positive, and trusted environment for every LNYSA player and family.
