Coaching Requirements

Thank you for stepping up to coach this season. The time, energy, and care you give to our players is what makes LNYSA special — and our league simply wouldn’t be possible without you.

Please read this page fully. Some items apply to new coaches only, while others apply to all coaches. Items below must be completed before the start of the season unless noted otherwise.

Step 1: Register as a Coach

If you have not already registered as a coach, please complete coach registration first:

Required Coach Items (Complete Before Season Starts)

A) Concussion Online Training

The U.S. Soccer Grassroots 7v7, 9v9, and 11v11 license includes a safety module that satisfies this requirement.
New LNYSA coaches: You must complete your Grassroots license.

B) Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Online Training

The U.S. Soccer Grassroots 7v7, 9v9, and 11v11 license includes a safety module that satisfies this requirement.
New LNYSA coaches: You must complete your Grassroots license.

C) SafeSport Online Training (All Coaches)

All coaches must complete SafeSport training and take the required annual refresher each year.

D) Participate in Field Training (New Coaches)

New coaches are required to attend field training. Meeting details are posted in the News section of the LNYSA website.

E) Live Scan (One-Time Requirement)

Live Scan only needs to be completed once during your LNYSA coaching career (not every season).

F) Mandated Reporter Training

Complete the Mandated Reporter online training and register as: “Sports and Rec Volunteers.”

Note for new coaches: If you are new to coaching at LNYSA, your U.S. Soccer Grassroots license (7v7, 9v9, 11v11) is required and includes the safety modules that cover both Concussion and Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

Step 2 - Intro to Grassroots

Coach Licensing Requirement (U.S. Soccer Grassroots)

All LNYSA coaches are required to complete a coach license. The U.S. Soccer Grassroots License is completed through the U.S. Soccer Learning Center and starts with a short online introductory course.

Step 1: Create Your U.S. Soccer Learning Center Account

Start by creating an account (or logging in) to the U.S. Soccer Learning Center. This is where you will complete the required online course.

Step 2: Take the Required Intro Course (20 Minutes)

Once your account is created, complete the online course: Introduction to Grassroots Coaching.

Why this course matters

  • It is the required prerequisite for all U.S. Soccer Grassroots Licensing Courses
  • It is free and takes about 20 minutes
  • After completion, coaches receive four complimentary Play-Practice-Play training sessions

Step 3: Request Your Free Course Code

After completing the Intro Course, the next step is to obtain a free code for your Grassroots Licensing Course (7v7, 9v9, or 11v11).

✅ Email the LNYSA Coach Admin to request the code through for the 7v7, 9v9, or 11v11 License.

Included at no cost: Your Grassroots license course code also includes the required safety education modules, including concussion and sudden cardiac arrest requirements.

Step 4 Complete your SafeSport Requirement

SafeSport Online Training & Certificate

SafeSport is the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Movement’s initiative to help recognize, prevent, and respond to misconduct in sport. All coaches must complete SafeSport training and keep it current each year.

Training Time & Renewal

  • Required SafeSport Training: ~90 minutes
  • Certificate Validity: 11 months
  • Annual Refresher: ~20 minutes

Important: Please download and save a copy of your completion certificate for your records.

Returning Coaches (Refresher / Existing Account)

SafeSport has moved to a new platform. If you have completed SafeSport training in the past, you will need to access your existing account and transfer your previous trainings. Please do NOT create a new or duplicate profile.

  1. Click “Login” (top right)
  2. Click “Forgot Password”
  3. Check your email and click the password reset link
  4. After logging in, go to “My Courses” and locate the refresher training

New Coaches (First-Time SafeSport Training)

New coaches will create a SafeSport account and enroll using the U.S. Soccer Federation course.

  2. Enter the Enrollment Key:

  3. Complete the information on the Sign Up page
  4. Select “Catalog”
  5. Start “SafeSport Trained – US Soccer Federation”
  6. After completion, upload your certificate to your profile — or email it to us and we can upload it for you

STEP 5 Participate in the Field Training

New coaches to participate in the Field Training session (2 hrs). Check the LNYSA events and the calendar for the exact date and location of this event. Live Scan (Step 6) will be provided during this session as well.

Step 6 Completing Livescan

Step 6: Complete Live Scan (Fingerprinting)

Who needs Live Scan? All volunteers (coaches, referees, and board members) must complete the Live Scan application and fingerprinting process.

Good news: Live Scan is a one-time requirement. Once completed, we will update your coach record in the Cal South membership platform.

How to Complete Your Live Scan

  1. Complete the Cal South Live Scan application

  2. Print TWO copies of the completed application.
  3. Bring your forms to a Live Scan session (if scheduled) or visit the Live Scan processing office listed below.

Live Scan Options

LNYSA frequently invites the Live Scan team to coach events and meetings for convenience. Before driving to the office, email us to see if an on-site Live Scan session is coming up soon.
