Below is a rundown of the main volunteer roles we fill each year so you can decide which opportunity is the best fit for you.
Coaches & Assistant Coaches
Every team needs at least one coach, and ideally a coach plus an assistant coach, to mentor and guide players throughout the season.
Coaches plan and supervise practices, help develop fitness and soccer skills, and support players on game day.
At younger ages like U5, U6, U7, and U8, coaches follow LNYSA training to teach age-specific skills. As players get older, coaches also introduce field awareness, positions, and basic tactics.
Coaches are required to complete some training. Email us to learn more about coaching.
Team Manager
Team Managers provide valuable support to coaches so they can stay focused on training and player development.
A Team Manager helps with team communications, sending out schedules, notifying parents of changes, and helping coordinate team logistics.
This may include organizing snacks, helping arrange scrimmages, ordering a team banner, or helping with an end-of-season party.
Referees & Junior Refs
Teams in the U10 division and above are asked to nominate a referee or junior referee to help cover recreational games during the season.
Junior referees are often high school-age players who want to stay connected to the game and gain leadership experience.
We ask referees to cover approximately 4–5 games per season. Referees do more than apply the Laws of the Game—they help ensure matches are fair and safe for all players.
Division Directors
Division Directors serve as age-group coordinators for each division during the season.
They support coaches in their division with items like practice assignments, division updates, rule clarification, and general coordination.
If you enjoy organization, communication, and helping many teams at once, this is a valuable leadership role. Email us to learn more.
Field Helpers
For volunteers who can donate just 1–2 hours in a season, this is one of the easiest and most helpful ways to contribute.
Field Helpers assist with setup tasks such as lining grass fields, putting up banners, moving goals or equipment, and returning items to lockers after use.
School Liaison
Help connect LNYSA programs to families at your child’s school.
School Liaisons talk with parents about their experience with LNYSA, help promote programs and registration, and share feedback from parents and schools about our youth programs.
