The change comes after extensive evaluation and collaboration among the nation’s largest youth soccer organizations. Leaders say the updated cycle is intended to better align players with their school-grade peers, helping support social development, team continuity, and overall participation.
Beginning in 2026–27, all major US Youth Soccer competitions — including the National Championships, Presidents Cup, and National League — will follow this adjusted timeline. The decision comes alongside a new U.S. Soccer policy granting member organizations the flexibility to establish their own age-group rules for their leagues and events.
To assist families during the transition, U.S. Soccer has launched an online tool that allows parents to easily determine the correct age group for their child based on birthdate.
The new age-group calendar will officially take effect nationwide for all participating organizations starting with the 2026–27 registration year, marking one of the most significant structural updates to youth soccer in the past decade.
