LNYSA Coaching Guidelines

In LNYSA we believe children play recreational soccer for fun which is the main reason why most people play any kind of sport. If it is not fun they will be turned off the sport and miss some wonderful opportunities to  meet new team-mates, make new friends, get some exercise and have fun.
We believe the Coach has the key role in ensuring that the players are exposed to the right kind of soccer experience and so Cal South & LNYSA have set up the following guidelines for coaches in LNYSA:

  • All coaching is to be positive, upbeat, without criticism, yelling, blame or bias.
  • The Coach is the role model for the parents and players
  • All players will play in ¾ of the game. We believe players learn more by playing than by watching from the bench!
  • Positions will be rotated so players get an opportunity to be exposed to the different field positions in soccer (keeper, defenders, midfield, forwards) so they understand how each group of positions fits together.
  • The first regular season games will not count for play-off seeding as this will only encourage some coaches to put winning first from the first kick. We believe making the score inconsequential will enable coaches to rotate players to play different positions without worrying about the win/loss record.
  • We believe the progress of each individual player is more important than concentrating on building the skills of a few players so the team wins.
  • We believe kids play for fun and that’s what we want them to have.
  • They’re just kids. It’s just a game. They’re just kids playing a game.
