As an LNYSA coach, the situation may arise that you wish to add a player to your team that is currently active with another Calsouth league. In certain situations in the Spring Season these players will be able to make "guest appearances" on your team as long as the player has a valid Calsouth ID and has a copy of her ID card for submission at all games. In most cases, in order to add a current Calsouth league affiliated player to your roster you will need to follow the player transfer process highlighted below.
CYSA-South (Cal South) is the organization that is the governing body under which our teams participate. Cal South is the organization that issues Player and Administrator Cards. They also administer the Risk Management and Coaches Education Programs as well as provide insurance to our members.
To initiate a player transfer, a Player Release and Transfer form must be completed to allow a player to be released from the team to which he/she has been rostered for the seasonal soccer year.
Note : Cal South imposes a “Roster Freeze” period whereby players rostered to a team cannot be released or transferred to another team without acceptance by Calsouth of the PlayerTransferWaiverForm.pdf . The Roster Freeze Date for the seasonal soccer season is August 1, 2009 through the first Monday after Thanksgiving. Note there are different Roster Freeze Periods and Roster Freeze Dates for State and National Cup Competition.
The Outline for the Player Transfer Process is as follows:
- Request authorization to make a player transfer from your Division Director
- Download and complete the Release_and_Transfer_Form.pdf
- Parent & Player to sign the form and attach the League Player card and Registration form
- Parent to request the form is signed by Coach for previous team & their League Registrar
- LNYSA Coach to sign form and submit to LNYSA Registrar
- Email or fax form (plus attachments) to

or fax 877-285-9170 for submission to the Calsouth District 3 Commissioner
- Once Player released LNYSA Registrar will Print LNYSA Player card for collection by LNYSA Coach
The Form requires the following signatures: Player, Parent, Team Official (Coach or League Official), LNYSA Registrar and District Commissioner. These signatures are required from both the team the player is transferring from as well as the team they are transferring to. If they are not transferring to a specific team then the transferring to section is left blank and they are placed in the District Pool. The player’s current CYSA Player Card and Player Registration Form must be attached to the Release and Transfer Form when it is submitted to Calsouth.
If you have any questions regarding the player transfer process you can contact either the LNYSA Registrar (

Developing coaching skills is a fundamental step towards developing the youth players. We have started a program this year to offer an opportunity for LNYSA coaches to attend advance coaching sessions to improve their skills. The first session we have planned is scheduled for Friday January 29th, 5:30-8:30 PM at Crown Valley Park. The topic for this session is "Speed of Play". We have invited Coach Ian Woodhead from Santiago Canyon College to conduct this session. The session is open and free to all coaches and specially recommended for coaches and assistants coaching signature, all-star, U10 and older teams holding E, and D licenses. You must sign up in advance by registering here.
The event will be introduced by Ali Diba, LNYSA Coach Administrator and led by Ian Woodhead, Head Coach for Santiago College. Head coach Ian Woodhead has guided the Santiago Canyon Hawks to five consecutive Orange Empire Conference Championships in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and as Co-Champions in 2008. The Hawks also won the first State Championship in the school's history in 2006. Woodhead was named the 'Orange Empire Conference Coach of the Year' in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2007. Woodhead also won the 'Faculty Excellence Award' for Santiago Canyon College in 2007.
In addition he has won a Community College State and National Championship (1999), and two West-Coast Regional State ODP Championships (1999, 2005) and 2 C.I.F Championships (1996, 2000) in his coaching career. In 2000 he was named CIF Division 3 Coach of the Year.
Woodhead obtained the highest soccer coaching qualification available in the United States, the USSF 'A' License, in 1995. He successfully completed part 1 of the European UEFA 'A' License in 2001. As a player, Woodhead captained Portsmouth Polytechnic to the final four of the English collegiate soccer championships in 1991. |

As the season comes to an exciting finish, we ask that you help us prepare for next year. As many of you know, we strive to achieve balanced teams to ensure fun competition for all. We ask that you help with this effort by providing a brief evaluation of each of your players. This will help us keep up to date information for the draft next spring and next fall. This year you don't have to hassle with spreadsheets and emails - just log in to the LNYSA player evaluation system. Please contact your Division Director for details on how to log in and complete player evaluations. |
Welcome to the new season. We want this to be the best possible experience for the players, parents and you. Here are ten things to remember every week to help make this a great season:
1. Have Fun!!! Make sure the kids have fun! Make sure the parents have fun!! Listen to yourself and the way you talk to your players. If you're not having fun, get off the field, go to your car and listen to the Moonlight Sonata. Or Bach. Or Norah Jones. Not Metallica. Then come back and have some fun. 2. Guidelines: Please review the playing guidelines for your age group in the LNYSA 2009 Play Guidelines Summary. There have been some changes in some divisions this year.. 3. You're the Coach. Wear your coach shirts - let the referee know who is in charge of the sideline. Remember, you have only ONE assistant on the sideline - make sure he/she wears the coach's shirt too. Also, try to look like a coach, not Laird Hamilton. Flip-flops and board shorts look good on the beach, not the pitch. If you don't have a shirt then contact LNYSA Coach Administration to get one. No license translates into no shirt.
Remind your parents that you're the coach. Parents should cheer from the sidelines. We ask that parents not cheer from the endlines - ask them not to go beyond the 18 yard line (top of the penalty box) or to the opponents' side of the field. 4. The Referee is your Friend - Remember the refs are volunteers. Many are still learning the game. Don't challenge the referee on any call during or after the match. Also, if you, an assistant or a parent challenges, argues or verbally criticizes any of our youth referees, the head coach and the person who makes the challenge will be subject to immediate suspension/discipline. Furthermore they will be asked to referee a couple of games so they develop an appreciation for the position. You and your assistant should stay inside the coaches' technical area the entire time unless asked by the referee to step into the field. The technical area is usually marked on the sideline - or remember to always stay back three feet from the touchline and to never go beyond the width of the center circle on the field. 5. Coaches are like Scouts: Be prepared - know in advance when you are going to substitute/rotate players during breaks. Remember - each child should play 3/4 of the match. We know some teams/games will have one or two players who don't play three quarters. Make sure that player plays three quarters during the next match. Print your lineup card for the referee in advance.Download the card, fill it out in advance and print it out before each game. You will find the cards on the LNYSA web site (the links are below).
6. Drink before you have to! Remember the importance of proper hydration, especially in the early part of the season while it is hot. Make sure your players are drinking plenty of water before, during and after games and practices. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and what to do. Please review the US Youth Soccer Heat and Hydration Guidelines. 7. Kidsafe: Are you following Kidsafe rules? Have ORIGINAL signed releases (CalSouth Registration forms) at all games and practices. Have basic first aid, including ice or ice packs at all games and practices. Is there an adult of the same gender of the players at all practices? Have you assigned a Kidsafe mom/dad for each practice? 8. Respect the Fields. We have the best fields in Orange County. Please clean up after yourself. Please, have your 'snack parent' bring a trash bag and clean up any garbage. Also, the city provides recycling bins at all fields for plastic/glass. 9. Field set-up and take down. BE RESPONSIBLE. If your match is the first match of the day, please make sure that you have a parent arrive early and stripe the fields and set flags. For youngers, this includes setting up goals. If your match is the last match of the day, make sure flags and goals are put away and the lockers are locked. Last year we spent a couple thousand dollars on lost/stolen equipment that was not put away after matches. Your division director will provide the locker combination for your field(s). 10. Last but not least: - They're just kids. - It's just a game. - They're just kids playing a game FOR FUN |
